Women’s magazines traditionally play an important role in disseminating ideas, whether they are about fashion, lifestyle, politics or gossip. Reading BEE focuses on deep social issues, political debates, literary and intellectual discussions. It deals with questions of gender equality and women’s rights, and also the more serious issues of domestic violence, forced marriages and female sexual mutilation. These situations, as well as those who are struggling to help them, usually get very little coverage in women’s magazines.

The print media is classically driven by consumer forces, making it stereotyped with massive repetition. Contemporary women’s magazines are full of fashion, gossip, and beauty products. This creates a female role model who is liberated in a fashion sense, aspires to be a size zero and uses the latest designer products. Very little space is given to socio-political and intellectual content in women’s magazines.

Our survey revealed that Asian women play a significant role in all fields of life, whether it’s media, science or the financial world. This cerebral Asian woman needs more intellectual and thought-provoking material in a women’s magazine.

Beauty, of course, is an important element of women’s life.  BEE is committed to features on lifestyle, popular psychology, fashion and
innovative cuisines. The BEE science section will keep our readers updated with new research and the scientific basis of things in daily life. It will also give our readers the latest updates in medicine in a simple and comprehensible way. The features section will include stories about women who made a difference, not by a stroke of luck or chance, but after a long and hard journey. Media is cruel and manipulative but there is still a possibility of practising good quality journalism by involving normal people from different walks of life.

There is a need for change. Change needs to be cautious and constructive. Breaking the stereotype and material-driven pattern is a challenge and we are focused on it. This magazine will be launched on 6th March 2009 in London and 10th March 2009 in Dubai with 20,000 copies each. The magazine will be distributed at all major stores including WH Smith and Borders. The magazine is a high quality production both in terms of print and editorial quality. Most of the major media houses have shown great interest in this product as the idea is novel.
